Billions of pounds are being wasted in paying industries in developing countries to reduce climate change emissions, according to two analyses of the UN’s carbon offsetting programme.

Leading academics and watchdog groups allege that the UN’s main offset fund is being routinely abused by chemical, wind, gas and hydro companies who are claiming emission reduction credits for projects that should not qualify. The result is that no genuine pollution cuts are being made, undermining assurances by the UK government and others that carbon markets are dramatically reducing greenhouse gases, the researchers say. The criticism centres on the UN’s clean development mechanism (CDM), an international system established by the Kyoto process that allows rich countries to meet emissions targets by funding clean energy projects in developing nations.

Credits from the project are being bought by European companies and governments who are unable to meet their carbon reduction targets.

The market for CDM credits is growing fast. At present it is worth nearly $20bn a year, but this is expected to grow to over $100bn within four years. More than 1,000 projects have so far been approved, and 2,000 more are making their way through the process.

Hmmm, it seems Obama might lean towards telling us what to drive, how much to eat, and how cold/hot or home ought to be. Check it out!

Trust me, think this out to its logical solution folks. Add these things up THEN re-consider Obama’s statements. Fat people, and SUV drivers, and folks who keep their homes at comfortable temperatures are causing global warming according to Obama, so, if he says we CANNOT eat, and drive what we want, then what is next? Think about that!

Evangelicals? Looks that way

When the Senate takes up legislation next month to confront global warming, environmental groups will have some fervent new allies: evangelicals and other Christian activists.

Concerned about what they see as a moral and biblical issue, religious groups from the right are joining with environmental organizations from the left in supporting strong measures to fight global warming.

“When evangelicals speak, Republicans listen,” said Richard Cizik, vice president of government affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals. “And Republicans, frankly, are listening to what we’re saying.”

Oh just great, more voices crying that the sky is falling!

Can you say opportunist? How about tragedy pimp? Either would surely apply in this case.

Former Vice President Al Gore in an interview on NPR’s May 6 “Fresh Air” broadcast did just that. He was interviewed by “Fresh Air” host Terry Gross about the release of his book, “The Assault on Reason,” in paperback.  

“And as we’re talking today, Terry, the death count in Myanmar from the cyclone that hit there yesterday has been rising from 15,000 to way on up there to much higher numbers now being speculated,” Gore said. “And last year a catastrophic storm from last fall hit Bangladesh. The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China – and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming.”

Gore claimed global warming is forcing ocean temperatures to rise, which is causing storms, including cyclones and hurricanes, to intensify.

“It’s also important to note that the emerging consensus among the climate scientists is although any individual storm can’t be linked singularly to global warming – we’ve always had hurricanes,” Gore said. “Nevertheless, the trend toward more Category 5 storms – the larger ones and trend toward stronger and more destructive storms appears to be linked to global warming and specifically to the impact of global warming on higher ocean temperatures in the top couple of hundred feet of the ocean, which drives convection energy and moisture into these storms and makes them more powerful.”

Hmmm, Gorezilla keeps trying to convince us all that severe weather never happened before climate change. And, some folks will listen with their hearts and emotions and not their heads.

But, if you look at how Gorezilla acts, flying around the gobe in private jets, making HUGE carbon footprints with concerts and generally living in ways he says are killing the earth, how can anyone take him seriously?

Either he is just a scam artist who is making BIG BIG MONEY off of this, or he is a liar! Or both?

Penguins in a video about global warming? Fine, but this a story about climate change damaging the NORTH Pole. Penguins only live at the SOUTH Pole. Of course, to be fair, maybe MSNBC wants not bring up the South Pole, where ice is expanding.
