The Economist analyzes Obamaconics

FOR a man who has placed “hope” at the centre of his campaign, Barack Obama can sound pretty darned depressing. As the battle for the Democratic nomination reaches a climax in Texas and Ohio, the front-runner’s speeches have begun to paint a world in which laid-off parents compete with their children for minimum-wage jobs while corporate fat-cats mis-sell dodgy mortgages and ship jobs off to Mexico. The man who claims to be a “post-partisan” centrist seems to be channelling the spirit of William Jennings Bryan, the original American populist, who thunderously demanded to know “Upon which side shall the Democratic Party fight—upon the side of ‘the idle holders of idle capital’ or upon the side of ‘the struggling masses’?”

There is no denying that for some middle-class Americans, the past few years have indeed been a struggle. What is missing from Mr Obama’s speeches is any hint that this is not the whole story: that globalisation brings down prices and increases consumer choice; that unemployment is low by historical standards; that American companies are still the world’s most dynamic and creative; and that Americans still, on the whole, live lives of astonishing affluence.

Coffee with female student to cost man 180 lashes

http://reportonarrakis.blogspot.com…for-having.html

A university professor allegedly caught in a Saudi-style honey trap has been sentenced to 180 lashes and eight months in jail — for having coffee with a girl.

The man, a prominent and well-respected Saudi teacher of psychology at Umm al-Qra University in the holy city of Mecca, was framed by the religious police after he angered some of their members at a training course, his lawyer said.
This is another example of radical Islam run amok. This is no better than any Stalinist or Maoist crackdown on basic human liberties. It is anti-human rights and it is evil!

Guess which celeb wants to STAY in Iraq?

Posted in Culture, Uncategorized, War on Terror on February 28th, 2008 by gatordoug

Go on, take a stab at it. What have you got to lose? Think hard, read some samples of the celeb’s words and keep trying, then, check out the link to find out who the mystery celeb is.

The request is familiar to American ears: “Bring them home.”

But in Iraq, where I’ve just met with American and Iraqi leaders, the phrase carries a different meaning. It does not refer to the departure of U.S. troops, but to the return of the millions of innocent Iraqis who have been driven out of their homes and, in many cases, out of the country.

Have a guess yet? No, OK, here is more

What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance. UNHCR has appealed for $261 million this year to provide for refugees and internally displaced persons. That is not a small amount of money — but it is less than the U.S. spends each day to fight the war in Iraq. I would like to call on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy.

As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.

It seems to me that now is the moment to address the humanitarian side of this situation. Without the right support, we could miss an opportunity to do some of the good we always stated we intended to do.

Still stumped? OK check out the link! http://www.washingtonpost.com…hpid=opinionsbox1

Obama rails against NAFTA. But, is he serious?

Posted in Politics, Uncategorized on February 28th, 2008 by gatordoug

http://www.ctv.ca…20080227?hub=QPeriod

Barack Obama has ratcheted up his attacks on NAFTA, but a senior member of his campaign team told a Canadian official not to take his criticisms seriously, CTV News has learned.

Both Obama and Hillary Clinton have been critical of the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement over the course of the Democratic primaries, saying that the deal has cost U.S. workers’ jobs.

Within the last month, a top staff member for Obama’s campaign telephoned Michael Wilson, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, and warned him that Obama would speak out against NAFTA, according to Canadian sources.

The staff member reassured Wilson that the criticisms would only be campaign rhetoric, and should not be taken at face value.

Obama has some problem here it seems. His loyal, star-struck groupies might want to take notice. He seems to be suffering from one of the Libeal maladies I have diagnosed, TDD. Truth Deficit Disorder.

NY Slimes questioning whether McCain is a REAL American

Posted in MEDIA BIAS!, Politics, Uncategorized on February 28th, 2008 by gatordoug

http://www.nytimes.com…S6XOL2N6lL6Kax7hJIjLIg&oref=slogin

The question has nagged at the parents of Americans born outside the continental United States for generations: Dare their children aspire to grow up and become president? In the case of Senator John McCain of Arizona, the issue is becoming more than a matter of parental daydreaming.

Mr. McCain’s likely nomination as the Republican candidate for president and the happenstance of his birth in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 are reviving a musty debate that has surfaced periodically since the founders first set quill to parchment and declared that only a “natural-born citizen” can hold the nation’s highest office.

The Slimes just being the Slimes again. They surely knew of this “issue” when they endorsed McCain, they had to. But, it only matters now? Why? Simple my friends, they wanted McCain to be the GOP nominee, but now, it is time for the long knives!

Religion of Peace strikes again! Danish art exhibit shut down by threats

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au…12377,00.html

AN exhibition by Danish artists in Berlin has been closed due to threats received over a photo deemed to be offensive to Muslims, organisers said.

The exhibition, which opened in central Berlin on February 22, has been closed to ensure the safety of staff and visitors, Ralf Hartmann from the artists’ collective Kunstverein Tiergarten said today.

The show by Danish collective Surrend is aimed at depicting what they say is the absurdity of extremism in all religions.

Ah, so this “art” defames all religions, yet the threats came over the arts offense to Muslims? Hmmmm

Box cutter hidden in a book?

Posted in News you can use, Uncategorized, War on Terror on February 26th, 2008 by gatordoug

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/boxcutter_tia.shtm

The Clearwater man pleads guilty, saying he had forgotten about the box cutter.

The X-ray image of a box cutter inside Benjamin Baines Jr.’s backpack caught the attention of federal officers Sunday morning at Tampa International Airport.

But it was the packaging that really jolted them: a hollowed-out book that hid the razor-sharp tool. Also inside the backpack: a Koran, a Holy Bible and rap music lyrics referencing police, drugs and guns.

A Koran, a Holy Bible and rap music lyrics referencing police, drugs and guns and a box cutter? Sounds like a punchline to a bad joke. The man who was trying to smuggle this deadly weapon on a plane says he FORGOT it was there? Forgot? Fogot you HID a deadly weapon in a hollowed out book? Yeah, right.

McCain looking at Tom Ridge for VP?

Posted in Politics, Uncategorized on February 26th, 2008 by gatordoug

http://www.weeklystandard.com…ridge_for_vp_1.asp

I’ve heard from two different sources that Tom Ridge is at or near the top of the list to be VP.

This would not come entirely out of the blue, if it’s true. McCain mentions Ridge frequently on the trail, and tactically it makes a lot of sense. Ridge was an extremely popular governor in Pennsylvania, and was widely believe to have been on the short list for the VP job in 2000. Also, Ridge is a combat veteran, like McCain. It would set up a strong contrast with a Democratic ticket that may not boast a veteran let alone a war hero.

I still think Fred Thompson makes the most sense, and regular readers will know well of this blog’s fondness for Sarah Palin, but the rumor mill says Ridge.

Well, I certainly would LOVE Fred as VP, as would many Conservatives. At least we would have one true Conservative in the administration.

Another interesting choice would be Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. Ed Morrissey at Captain’s Quarters has a video of an interview the Washington Post did with Governor Palin. http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/017129.php

Video-Hillary interview on the 700 Club

Wow! She must be desperate. Obama is cleaning her clock, and now leads in Texas and is closing ground in Ohio. Fact is Hillary could be out of the race fairly soon. So, I imagine she figures why not go on Christian TV. I just cannot see how this will help her with Liberal voters. Maybe she is hoping Conservatives, who know who their nominee is going to be, will vote for her if she appears more Conservative than Obama. Two words, FAT CHANCE!

Obamamania geting stronger?

Posted in Politics, Uncategorized on February 26th, 2008 by gatordoug

http://www.cbsnews.com…main3874915.shtml

Obama, coming off 11 straight primary and caucus victories, had the support of 54 percent of Democratic primary voters nationally. Clinton had 38 percent support.

In a CBS News poll taken three weeks ago, shortly before Super Tuesday, Obama and Clinton were tied at 41 percent. Clinton led by 15 points nationally in January.

The former first lady has lost her advantage among women, according to the poll: The two leading Democrats now have even levels of support among female primary voters.

Men, meanwhile, disproportionately favor Obama. He leads Clinton among male Democratic primary voters 67 percent to 28 percent, and leads among white men 61 percent to 33 percent.
And to think, once upon a time we thought Hillary was inevitable as the Democratic nominee. But, this is what happens when a political party has two candidates with almost identical ideals, but very different likability factors. And do I really need to say who has the edge in likability?

Two winnable wars

Posted in MEDIA BIAS!, Uncategorized, War on Terror on February 24th, 2008 by gatordoug

Anthony Cordesman, a former skeptic on Iraq and the surge makes a great case, that, the perceptions of many that these wars are hopeless is dead wrong
http://www.washingtonpost.com…AR2008022202176.html

No one can return from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, as I recently did, without believing that these are wars that can still be won. They are also clearly wars that can still be lost, but visits to the battlefield show that these conflicts are very different from the wars being described in American political campaigns and most of the debates outside the United States.

These conflicts involve far more than combat between the United States and its allies against insurgent movements such as al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Taliban. Meaningful victory can come only if tactical military victories end in ideological and political victories and in successful governance and development. Dollars are as important as bullets, and so are political accommodation, effective government services and clear demonstrations that there is a future that does not need to be built on Islamist extremism.

The military situations in Iraq and Afghanistan are very different. The United States and its allies are winning virtually every tactical clash in both countries. In Iraq, however, al-Qaeda is clearly losing in every province. It is being reduced to a losing struggle for control of Nineveh and Mosul. There is a very real prospect of coalition forces bringing a reasonable degree of security if decisions such as Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s announcement Friday to extend his militia’s cease-fire six months continue over a period of years.
